Bernie Hiestand grew up a south
Taranaki sheep farmer’s son, going
straight from Opunake High School to
his fitting and turning apprenticeship
at the Kapuni Lactose factory (now
part of Fonterra). Having married a
Lower Hutt girl, he moved there in
1976, starting a job as a development
engineer. Bernie has been involved
in leading product development ever
since, forming his own consultancy in
1989 called Metal Technics Ltd.
“Years ago I purchased a 21 inch
rotary lawn mower, with a large
catcher. The problem was, my
conventional wheelbarrow held less
than two catchers of grass. As my
large lawns typically yielded six to
eight catchers of grass, I became
frustrated at having to constantly
wobble back and forth to empty the
overstuffed wheelbarrow, leaving a
trail of clippings as I went.
“I am also well aware that any
hedge or tree trimmings have to
be cut up small to fit in a regular
tub shape barrow, and that single
wheeled barrows always seem to tip
over sideways, just when you don’t
want them too.
“After a long look at the large
barrows available, I decided nothing
really ticked all the boxes, so set out
to make my own.
“Firstly, and most obviously,
quarter of a cubic metre capacity.
The design had to be robust and
durable, but also light and easy to
manoeuvre, as I know women are
Constructed of aluminium and
tanalised plywood, Bernies Barrow
has a 250kg load limit, with a tare
weight of only 30kg. An optional
drawbar attachment easily converts
the barrow into a ride-on mower
trailer, and back to a barrow, all
without the need for tools.
Two large diameter wheels, with
flat-free tyres ensure you never
get a puncture, make manoeuvring
incredibly easy, even with a big load.
Both ends lift out to carry branches,
fence railings, and long tools etc.
The folding legs, removable
handles and wheels, ensure
compact packaging and storage. The
whole barrow assembles straight out
of the box without any tools.
Dogs are part of the family and
much like their human counterparts,
keeping them healthy involves
exercise and a healthy diet.
